“I cannot make children's hurts and fears and frustrations and disappointments go away. Therefore, I will soften the blow... I will with kindness, gentleness, and tenderness touch the inner world of the vulnerable child.” --Dr. Garry L. Landreth
Parents want what’s best for their children and seeing your child struggle with anger, rejection, isolation, or worry can be more painful than going through it yourself. Many of my clients come to therapy after their child began acting out in school. By this point, most parents have tried everything at they know to do, and need the help of a trained professional.
I believe that therapy has to be a judgment-free place--no judgment about your parenting or how you’ve tried to cope with your struggles. I’m here as a listener and a trained professional with some ideas about how to help things change. Those ideas will be specific to your situation but might include education about different coping skills or practice using these skills. I’m also EMDR trained, which is a specific technique that has shown to be effective for many adults and children.
I’m able to work one-on-one with your child, or we might choose family therapy. In the family, the issues of one member affect everyone else. I’d like to help your family learn to communicate peacefully and respectfully so that your child will grow into the best person they can be!
I feel confident that you can have the child and family you want, and it would be my pleasure to help you. I look forward to meeting you and your family!
Child Emotional Disturbance
If your child has started to act uncharacteristically angry, destructive, oppositional, isolated, sad or worried, you might want to reach out for an evaluation. I’ll be able to help you understand what may be going on and how to help. One effective approach is play therapy.
Family therapy helps develop or maintain a healthy, functional family. Families can learn to overcome disconnection and discord, by learning to love and interact with others more effectively. The lessons and habits your child is learning now will shape the rest of their lives. I’m ready to help your child and family succeed!
Child Trauma / Grief Groups
When children experience trauma or loss, they lack the ability to fully understand and express what is happening inside them. For adolescents, I also offer grief groups where teens share their experiences with other teens. Whether in group or individual counseling, your child can begin to feel happier, calmer, more effective in school, and more secure in their relationships.
