    Medication Management

We’re pleased to be affiliated with the practice of Dr. Kamal Shah, M.D. who offices in our suite.  He is a neurologist with extensive experience integrating therapy and medical treatment plans.  He works with clients to reduce their psychological distress through medication, with a specialization in addiction medicine.  He works closely with his clients to choose the most effective treatment with no more medication than is needed.  You can book with him directly at www.kamalshahmd.com or we will be happy to introduce you personally.

    Can medication help?

Medication can be a very helpful tool to overcoming psychological struggles.  These difficulties are associated with chemical imbalances in the brain which may be due to something that know has caused you pain or distress (e.g., divorce, trauma, substance abuse).  It may also be more biological, in which case you don’t know the cause.  Medication works to relieve your symptoms by correcting chemical imbalances in the brain.  They aren’t cures and are most effective when used with psychotherapy.  Some medications take a few weeks to work, and some people have to try more than one before finding the right fit, but it’s usually worth the effort.

How does it work with counseling?

Counseling helps change how you think or feel through talking about what has been troubling you.  Talking about it often brings a sense of relief by finding a new perspective or changing what you’re doing in a relationship or situation.  Through this process, the chemicals in your brain can return to a healthy balance.  Sometimes though, it’s helpful to toward a healthy chemical balance through medication.  Medication can often assist with the short-term relief that allows you to make the changes to your thoughts or behaviors that help with long-term relief.

    Will I get addicted?

Your physician will want to avoid medications that could make you addicted.  We all agree that’s not a problem you need.  If you’re concerned about this, please ask your provider.

    What about side effects?

Different medications do have different side effects, so remember to be open and honest with your physician.  Don’t suffer in silence!  They will likely have suggestions that can help.
